Copycat Task
The Copycat Scene I have chosen is a scene from The Man From U.N.C.L.E
The Man from U.N.C.L.E is a action and adventure, 60s style spy film where an America spy and a Russian spy are forced to team up to try and save the world from nuclear destruction.
The film is set during the Cold War in the 1960s so tensions between America and Russia are very high so when they have to join forces you know something terrible might happen.
In this scene in particular Solo confronts Illya and Gaby (a car mechanic from Germany who's father is being force to make nuclear bombs) about the fact that they are being followed by two men. They have a slight argument about how to handle the situation and Gaby and Illya leave to face the bad guys. They both arrive in an abandoned Italian ruin and two Italian thugs are waiting for them in the shadows. At first they approach slowly but the situation escalates to the point where a gun is pulled out at them, but they run away before anyone is seriously hurt. Then Solo swaggers in riling up Illya even more making Gaby have to shout at the two professional spies about growing up.
The reason I have decided to do this scene was; it's my favorite film ever, the scene will be challenging for the actors because of the accents and the scene will be challenging for the film-makers because of the locations and the costumes.
TRIVIA!
One of the reasons the film stayed in the 1960s time period was to allow it to have its own world, own reality, and own tone that would set it apart from films like the Bourne franchise and other recent spy thrillers, which take place in a modern time period.
The TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964) was partially developed by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Napoleon Solo had started out as a character in Fleming's novel "Goldfinger". In homage, in this film Alexander Waverly is a Commander in the British Naval Intelligence, the same rank that James Bond holds.
The suits that Henry Cavill wears as Napoleon Solo were created by renowned British tailor Timothy Everest, who has also worked on the James Bond, and Mission: Impossible films. Solo's suits feature unique details such as covered buttons and squared-off front edges that were referenced from the late 1960s. During one of his costume fittings at Everest's shop, Henry Cavill accidentally broke the change room door off its hinges. The staff kept it as a memento of the time that "Superman" broke their door.
Director Guy Ritchie looked at films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) for inspiration, trying to create a juxtaposition between humor and seriousness and attempting to cross genres to a degree.
Producer and co-screenwriter Lionel Wigram said of this movie: "One of the ways we put our own spin on it was by making it an origin story about how U.N.C.L.E. was formed. In the series, U.N.C.L.E. already existed. So in the midst of the Cold War you had the CIA and KGB secretly teaming for the greater good at a time when East-West relations were at their absolute worst. How did such an alliance come about?"
